Zeenat Aman’s Heartfelt Tribute to Parveen Babi — Exploring a Journey Beyond the Silver Screen

Parveen was gorgeous, glamorous and talented. Back in the 70s, we wore our hair in a similar manner and enjoyed Western fashion. Though neither of us saw it, we were told we had an uncanny resemblance. It must have been true, because as recently as last year I was approached in Dubai as “Parveen ma’am”.

Naturally the media at the time spun tales of competition and rivalry between us, but in reality we were always warm towards each other. Not best friends, but contemporaries, colleagues and well wishers. We worked together on Ashanti and Mahaan.

Parveen’s struggle with mental health illness came at a time when the country was still so insensitive and ignorant on these matters. After her death, I often ruminated on how she was remembered. The tabloids focused on her romantic relationships and “episodes”, but Parveen was much more than who she dated or what she said when she was unwell. I feel she never truly got the chance to say her piece.

She was intelligent and hardworking and creative. She loved reading, and I remember her curled up with a book in between shots on set. She achieved incredible success as an actor, even featuring on the cover of Time magazine. Later, she took up various creative pursuits, embarked on a spiritual journey, and started designing interiors. We stayed in touch on and off for years, before ultimately drifting apart.

Parveen was remarkable in many ways, and I hope she will be remembered for the effervescent person she was. 🌺

In a poignant and eloquently-worded post, Zeenat Aman, the iconic actress of yesteryears, has taken to Instagram to pay a heartfelt tribute to her co-star and fellow luminary, Parveen Babi, on what would have been her birth anniversary. Zeenat, who has gracefully transitioned from a film icon to a digital queen, shares her personal insights, unraveling the layers of their relationship, the media’s narrative, and the untold stories that shaped Parveen’s legacy.

“I’d like to remember and honor Parveen today, on her birthday,” Zeenat begins her post, reflecting on the allure and brilliance that was Parveen Babi. Drawing parallels between their fashion and style choices, Zeenat muses on their uncanny resemblance, which even persisted through the years as she was mistaken for Parveen. Her descriptive tone brings forth the nostalgia of an era that defined both their careers.

Dispelling the misconceptions perpetuated by the media, Zeenat candidly shares, “Naturally, the media at the time spun tales of competition and rivalry between us, but in reality, we were always warm towards each other. Not best friends, but contemporaries, colleagues, and well-wishers.” Zeenat’s revelation about their camaraderie adds a layer of authenticity to the history that was often overshadowed by sensationalism.

But it’s in the revelation of Parveen Babi’s struggle with mental health that Zeenat’s words resonate most profoundly. She delves into the societal ignorance of mental health issues during Parveen’s time, emphasizing how the tabloids focused on the superficial, overlooking Parveen’s multifaceted persona. “She was intelligent, hardworking, and creative,” Zeenat fondly recalls. Parveen’s penchant for reading and her pursuit of diverse creative endeavors beyond acting paint a vivid picture of her vibrant spirit.

Their paths may have diverged over the years, but Zeenat’s post immortalizes Parveen’s essence. She eloquently encapsulates the breadth of Parveen’s achievements, from gracing the cover of Time magazine to embarking on a spiritual journey and designing interiors. “Parveen was remarkable in many ways, and I hope she will be remembered for the effervescent person she was,” Zeenat poignantly concludes.

The passage of time has allowed for a reevaluation of Parveen Babi’s legacy. Once labeled ‘misunderstood,’ Parveen now emerges as a trailblazer in the realm of Hindi cinema, characterized by her progressive thinking and groundbreaking roles. Through the testament of her peers and friends like Zeenat, a more profound understanding of Parveen Babi’s legacy emerges, shedding light on one of India’s most enigmatic and revolutionary superstars.

As we honor Parveen Babi’s memory on her birth anniversary, Zeenat Aman’s words serve as a bridge between the past and present, offering a poignant insight into the lives, camaraderie, and struggles of these two iconic actresses who transcended the silver screen to etch their indelible mark in the annals of Bollywood history.
